The heroes (Taarna, Brock, Esmerelda with Drusilla, Cymoril with Tar'jar, Tolus, and Mikhail) continue exploring the inside of the Tower of Illusion with the assistance of Guy, a Suloise Captain charmed by Taarna, and Lord Gorkan, the Suel military commander of the Leum. The heroes rest for more than an hour within Lord Gorkan's barracks where Esmerelda uses a scroll from Mikhail with nap to restore much of the party's vigor. Lord Gorkan later comments that the tower gem clearly was reacting to the party, much as an organism does with antibodies.
The heroes battle six centaur, six ettin, 13 special "monks" from the Scarlet Brotherhood pulled from Cymoril's fears, two sabre cats, four giant lynx, four (real) dire wolves (who Mikhail saves), four lions, three (real) neo-men sent by the Suel, six formorian giants, six (real) hill giants, three su-monsters, and six illusionary and two real cloud giants (the real ones retreated judiciously). During this time Tolus discovers the fourth and final key and the heroes fight their way back to the magical door. The group enters and winds up battling Brock's greatest fear -- unarmed against a gargoyle, a wraith, and a shadow... The heroes overcome this and find themselves in the heart of the "gem."
Here, Mikhail discovers that the Tower of the Illusion in the past possessed a number of attributes which the Tower in the future does not -- namely the vast sum of knowledge from the lives of the spell-caster who powered the eleven gems...! Mikhail does point out that this knowledge has a definite "perspective" and a bit of play reveals that to be Morganti. Mikhail learns about temporal mechanics and the general functions of the Tower, Cymoril unlocks a tiny portion of her divine gifts, Esmerelda discovers the basics of the spell she is seeking cure moderate wounds, and Taarna gains an accurate understanding of Norse cosmology.
Mikhail then tears out the tower gem which sets the Tower of Illusion in time. The heroes gather in his bags of holding and using Esmerelda's ring of invisibility, the young psi leaves the Tower on Oerth, immediately teleporting to the region where Klarr will be to rest overnight.
In the morning, everyone is at full strength, except Cymoril at 87 of 88 and Tar'jar at 71 of 104.
