The heroes (Taarna, Brock, Esmerelda with Drusilla, Cymoril with Tar'jar, Tolus, and Mikhail) begin exploring the inside of the Tower of Illusion. The group then explores several rooms. Taarna finds a magical golden key and the heroes battle a series of illusionary foes, including four doppleganger, four wyverns, a nine-headed learnaean hydra (the the heroes bring to more than 20 heads before they slay it and it "kills" Brock), and five minotaur. The heroes then battle six REAL umber hulks as well as a squad of Suel soldiers and their two hounds. Mikhail telepathically convinces the hounds to join the party and after the heroes defeat all the humans without slaying them, Taarna charms one of the leaders. Several of the heroes face their own lives and Esmerelda and Mikhail seem changed for the better from the experience. The group then encounters two illusionary wyverns and five gargoyles. The heroes notice in the gem facets that they are not alone within the Tower...
