From a website about contemporary Arabic customs: To step into a Arab home is to become the guest of honor. Hospitality is integrated into the Arab culture at every level, from the market, to the neighborhoods, to visits from heads of state. Hospitality is closely related to Honor, which is really the most important value in Arab culture. No Arab would think of eating, drinking, smoking or even taking a piece of gum without first offering it to you. Even it's his last piece he will gladly give it to you. By honoring you, he is also honoring himself, and to refuse hospitality would be to dishonor both. meate.org/MillerPages/Hospitality.htm
