The heroes (Yavin, Katya, Hamish, Gilean, Kinsa, Moonleaf, Remort, Twyll, and Dormius) are aboard the wasp as Yavin spelljams into orbit. Just as he reaches the upper atmosphere, the spies a beholder tyrant ship bearing down on them. Clearly, the planet is under a spacer blockade! Yavin telepathically hails the other ship and is politely informed by the hive mother of the beholder craft that "everything on the planet surface, in orbit, or in between is the property of the Hive." At which point the tyrant dives for an intercept course... Yavin dodges the beholder vessel and Remort uses Yavin's telepathic cues to mentally probe the hive mother for information...including a plan to attack her. For about an hour, Yavin leads the tyrant on a chase after which the rest of the party climbs into bags of holding and Katya teleports them to the beholder ship.
Twyll launches a fireball which blows the eye stalks off of three of the four beholder guards on the bridge. The blast also damages all three orbii and the last beholder guard. Katya then unleashes an acid bolt on the surprised hive mother, miraculously burning her eyes off too! Right then, Kinsa dispel magics the series helm and the beholder tyrant loses power and begins free-falling...!
The heroes square off with the beholders and Hamish starts slaying. Gilean mind thrusts the only dangerous beholder, buying the fighters more time. One beholder telekinetically throws first Katya and then Kinsa around. The initial attack, however, puts the heroes at a distinct advantage, which they press. Both regular beholders die fairly quickly and Hamish largely ignores the two with chitinous claws, slashing open one of the orbii. Two beholder guards arrive from the other side and disintegrate the giff. Gilean nearly hacks the creature down but is also disintegrated. Katya's acid bolt finishes the creature and the heroes get back in their bags of holding so the summoner can teleport to safety, using her familiar's telepathic image of the moving ship as an anchor...
Before they left, Katya nabbed the bloodstone amulet -- all that was left of Gilean. Once safely in orbit, Hamish asks Yavin to commune with his god to learn the consequences of not completing his quest. Yavin does one better and uses his consequence spell, learning that the ENTIRE quest has been a ruse by the clergy of Vecna. The amulet would indeed reconfigure the portal network of Tovag Baragu, but not to the world-alignment of the ancient Baklunish, but rather so that the network opens onto Ravenloft, allowing the First Lich the opportunity to bodily escape his dimensional prison and return to Oerth.
Time to SERIOUSLY think about what is the party's next move...
