The heroes (Taarna, Rhom, Wynd with Thundr, Brock, Esmerelda with Drusilla, Tolus, Moonlight, Cliffy, and Tiana) escape the strange, dark, evil caves. They reason that if the demons brought the al karak elam children into those caverns a day ago, they're already dead (or worse) since these powerful adventurers struggled after only an hour or so. So, at noon, the party reunites with the Starwind and the two other pegasai and fly on to the edge of the Hellfurnaces, in the southwestern edge of the Yeomanry. In the meanwhile, Brock uses his staff of curing to heal Tolus' insanity. That night, Esmerelda dimensional folds back to Klarr for healing and Tolus catches the attention of Mikhail (after having ticked off both Todar and one of Stephanos' acolytes). The boy-druid accompanies the heroes back to the Yeomanry where he psychically heals everyone and provides some therapy sessions with Tolus. Two days later, the group arrives at the base of the volcanic mountains, but there, the group also spies a small, new settlement, Gateway, and a huge, looming maw-like cavern into the heart of the Hellfurnaces.
The heroes spend the night at Gateway, learning about the recently-appearing cavern and the skirmishes the locals have been having with dark elves and albino men. In the morning, the party flies all the way over the Hellfurnaces, aided by Wynd's lighten load spells. The heroes reach the edge of the Sea of Dust and make camp on the rocks. Beneath them is another tunnel, presumably the other end of the same one near gateway, some 300 miles away. Ten trolls the color of ash come to attack the heroes, wandering right through Moonlight's wall of fire spell. The heroes, nonetheless, make very short work of the monsters. Esmerelda then creates another dimensional fold back to the storm giants' castle, so the pegasai stallions can rendez-vous with the mare and colt.
In the morning, the heroes make use of Cliffy's magical house as well as his fly and invisibility spells, Esmerelda's polymoprh self (into a red dragon), Taarna's cool strength, and Rhom's boots of levitation to soar across 75 miles per day of the Sea of Dust from high above. Every two hours, Taarna and her two flying companions stop and rest, during which time Moonlight and/or Esmerelda use commune with nature to learn about the local area. The heroes pass many sunken, Suel cities surrounded by strange magics deep below the surface of the ashen desert.
The heroes stop to rest the evening of the 13th of Ready'reat (620/11/13) some 600 miles from the Hellfurnaces, deep within the Sea of Dust...
