The heroes (Yavin, Katya, Hamish, Gilean, Moonleaf, Kinsa, Remort, Twyll, Dormius, and Qumansi) go to sleep in Katya's shelter. Before midnight, while Hamish and Gilean are on watch, a band of more than a dozen giff appear and start hunting around for "something." With the help of Remort and then Gilean, the group learns that the giff are from the nearby city AND that they're trying to avoid the "ghosts" that slaughtered the beholder in the city. Gilean, Remort, and Dormius go out to try and reason with the creatures, but a battle quickly ensues and the giff lose even more quickly! Hamish gets nailed with a lucky shot and Gilean's leg is broken, but otherwise the heroes take down the hippo-men with little effort. More than half die in the exchange, in fact, though several live, including their captain.
