The heroes (Taarna, Rhom, Ichi, Wynd & Thundr, Shang-Lung, Brock, and Tolus) decide to bring the fight to the Bandit army. The release the messenger birds but first Shang (with the help of a nap from Aldric, itemizes everyone. He then transforms himself into a hawk as well, using Rhom's enchanted torc. The birds all flight back to the Bandit army camp, specifically one of the command tents, where Shang resumes his regular form and frees the party. A fight erupts almost immediately. At first the heroes think that they've caught the grandfather of assassins, but the naked man in the bed turns out to be a polymorphed type IV demon decoy. The heroes slay him nonetheless. They also slaughter three powerful assassins. Unfortunately, things do not entire go their way -- Rhom and Tolus are feared and miss most of the fight while the high-priest of Orcus successfully casts slay living on Ichi, snuffing out his life force! About then the giants show up and things get worse!
The heroes do manage to inflict decent casualties on the bandit army, particularly the leaders. They force the high-priest to word of recall and even drop the REAL grandfather of assassins, but he disappears as soon as he hits the group. At this point, the heroes are forced to flee. Shang-Lung itemizes Rhom and Ichi and then teleports himself as well as Tolus (they're all lighten loaded) back to Portown. His idea is to ask his wife, Sage Edulis-Drake, High-Priestess of Wee Jas, to raise his fellow monk. Unfortunately, this is the first time Shang has ever tried the spell and he instead winds up in the high temple of Wee Jas...in the Scarlet Brotherhood! Luckily no one is around and no wards go off, so the monk/mage shifts into a bat and flies off into the countryside to find somewhere to rest and regain his missing magic...
Meanwhile, Taarna and Brock run for their lives. They dodge and weave among the goblin tents and manage to even take out a couple foes before fleeing for their lives across the snowy fields. It is only luck that saves them...
Wynd and Thundr are less lucky. Though better prepared and covered with invisibility the pair are pursued by demons that can locate them. The elf and cooshee zip back and forth across the enemy camp before finally rushing up one of the steep dwarven staircases and fleeing AWAY from Bloodstone into the woods. Their fate: unknown...but the giants' hunters are on their trail!
