Ichi remained in Klarr, waiting for Taarna and Rhom's return. The monk spent a fair amount of time in the archer field, practicing deflecting arrows with Wynd and Kristoph, as the young quarter elf trains the elf in archery. Along with them are both Viktor and Martin as well as the cooshees Thundr, Billi, and Celem.
A group of figures comes up the path from Gnome Home, though Thundr notes that at least some of these figures are moving through the woods. Before the group can react, a hypnotic pattern enthralls nearly everyone, save Wynd, Thundr, Martin, and Ichi. Then 16 people spring into action to contain the bystandards while five monks and an assassin attempt to sneak up and slay Ichi. The monk manages to inflict heavy damage on his foes, though Wynd is not as lucky with his foes. Eight spear men guard the illusionist enthralling the majority of the group while a cleric of Wee Jas casts several hold person spells at him before finally invoking a prayer. Wynd and Thundr move into melee, using the spear men as cover from the six archers. In the confusion, Martin manages to slip past the guards and wound the priest of Wee Jas before being blasted with magic missiles. A master thief then tries to backstab Wynd, but fails. Thundr cleaves a bloody swath through the attackers. Ichi, meanwhile, slowly takes out his foes until finally he breaks off to help with the spell-casters. The cleric conjures a wall of thorns to screen the fight, but Wynd steps through this. That's when Ichi slays the cleric and confronts the phantasmal killer. The monk ignores the phantasm and it strikes him, killing him instantly. Wynd then unleashes a plant growth followed by spike growth and entangle as the assassins attempt to regroup. Despite attempts to dispel magic, only a wall of fog from the illusionist provides much of a defense, given that the elf can freely walk through the effect. All the monks fall, leaving the assassin and illusionist. A stick to snakes helps take the fight out of the former, but like the master thief, the illusionist manages to simply disappear. Sanau then arrives and the heroes recover Ichi's body.
Esmerelda casts speak with dead on the corpses and learns that this is part of a coordinated effort by the Scarlet Brotherhood to once and for all end the threat Ichi posed to the organization. The hit was sponsered by the head of the Brotherhood, Korenth Zan, Master of Spring, Father of Obedience himself.
Saanau and Wynd transport Ichi's body to the Temple of Wee Jas in Portown where they convince Sage Edulis-Drake to raise the monk in exchange for treasure, a +2/+3 vs large staff that also grants the wielder the power to see invisible objects, and a quest. Shang-Lung agrees to accompany the group, though Rhom, Esmerelda, and Corvin choose not to.
