The hobbits, Magenta and Amber, along with the gnomish clockwork engineers, K'tonk and Sprocket, decide to walk from the capitol of Amberwood, Dragondale, back to GnomeHome, outside of Klarr. About a week south of Amberwood, the group hears a disturbing tale. With the death of Iuz, the destruction of Iuz' orcish armies, and the near-collapse of the goblin nation in the Horned Society, combined with the general chaos among the human communities after nearly a decade of war, a group of local kobolds has demanded recognition of their own, sovereign fief. To push the point, the kobolds have kidnapped the local Baron's children as well as many other local young people. Baron Brax is making a general call for heroes to rescue his children and teach these kobolds a lesson. Given the size of kobolds, shorter adventurers are preferred...
The party meets up with a wolf-ridding hobbit, Trelf Brambleburr, who asks them to join him and his allies to deal with the kobolds. Also in the party are the hobbit archer, Bobby Socks, the dwarven fighter, Flinty, the gnomish fighter/illusionist (also from GnomeHome) Murph, and Meep the young kenku. Together, the group heads to the kobold settlement, guarded by a large palisade with guard towers.
The heroes break into two groups.
In the first group, Meep flies to a spot on the palisade where by night the watch towers cannot see Amber and Bobby climb up and over using rope ladders. The three then snipe at the kobolds in the guard tower, though the critters manage to sound an alarm. The three fight their way to the prison hut where they overwhelm many kobolds as well as a minotaur. There is a strange winch-device and below are the young captives, but MANY more than than the Baron thought -- nearly 20!
Meanwhile, Magenta, Flinty, K'tonk, Sprocket, Murph, and Trelf with Midnight did NOT hear the alarm sound and it isn't until the first party triggers a second alarm does the group charge. Using the speed of his black dire wolf, Trelf dashes to the palisade gate which he weakens with a warp wood. The heroes fight their way in and through the kobold village, Bobby gunning down the kobold archers in their towers.
Meanwhile, Meep flies down to start freeing the children, murdering the kobold captors. Several strange children, clearly victims of weird experimentation attempt to stop the kenku, but with a little help from Bobby and Amber, these too fall.
The heroes finally meet up and reach the captives, but there are too many to carry away safely. And before they can even try, a group of kobold heroes arrive. The leader, a kobold ranger, slaughters Magenta, sending Amber over the edge.
In the fight Sprocket, and Meep fall. Trelf used most of his healing getting in and healing Flinty, so there is not enough magic to go around, and both are merely patched up, but must be carried out. Further, Midnight's hip is broken and his paw seriously damaged. The heroes leave, but cannot rescue everyone.
The group fights free of the kobold village and drops off the victims to the Baron's men. A lone cleric of St. Cuthbert is with them and the priest is able to save the downed party members, though Midnight cannot continue. The heroes charge back in, fight past another group of kobold defenders who are trying to repair the breech in the palisades, and return to the experimental lab/prison. The heroes rescue the last three victims and Amber lights the place on fire.
Once safe, the heroes decide to return to Dragondale in order to have Magenta restored to life. A week later, they arrive and Black Robe agrees to do the spell. The quest: help the Flan reclaim their lands from the remaining orcish forces which have fled north...
