In the village of Usi, Rongo the shaman, Urthur the foreign scaly-hunter, and Galen the foreign jedi are joined by Saytang the warrior and Keakani the witch with her snake, Omaoma'o. Their goal is to definitively finish off the last of the lizard men camps on the island. The group tracks down one lair, but notes prints moving away and follows these. They battle a group of lizard men hunters in a sea cave, clearly an attempt to found a new home. The group then returns and slaughters all but one lizard men.
The following day, the heroes return. The single lizard man leads the adolescent and youngling lizard men away and the party gives chase, slaughtering the reptiles. They then head back and wipe out the infants in the breeding pool. Over the course of the next several days, the heroes scout the island, ensuring that there are, indeed, no more reptile-sentients posing a threat to the islanders.
Chief Ja-Kai, however, asks one last favor of the party. There have been tales of recent attacks by a massive marine crocodile in the deeper portions of the lagoon. In this the group is joined by Vinato, a potion maker from another archipeligo and ill-fitting the people of Usi. The heroes go out to protect the spearfishers. After a few days, they spot the creature, a 30' long reptilian shark-crocodile (similar to a plesiosaur, but more ferrocious).
Saytang, Urthur, and Rongo fight the beast in the water while the rest help from either canoes or the water. Galen tries to fight, but misses and Keakani rescues the pale foreigner before he sinks to the bottom of the lagoon. With a little luck, Urthur and Saytang wound the beast and Saytang and Rongo finish it off. The party are treated as heroes as the village celebrates with abundant fresh sea lizard!
A few days later, with Ja-Kai's blessing, the party leaves Usi in two out-riggers. They head first to Dawa, where they offer to serve the chief. She explains the only problem the people of Dawa have are the shark-men from the outer reefs of the island, a task beyond the party's ability. They then paddle to Kirikura, where that chief asks the heroes if they can slay a flying lizard that breathes fire and dwells on the highest peaks. Again out-classed, the heroes journey to Panitube. Here, the divers are threatened by mako sharks on the reefs an hour and a half off shore. Disheartened, the party sails to Burowao.
The chief of Burowao, Lana, has a mission she would dearly love the party's help with. Recently, a group of young men entered a taboo place and awoke a vengeful spirit which the warriors of Burowao cannot defeat. It comes only by night, but claims the life of those it strikes. The spirit of the fallen then returns with the first evil spirit to the taboo place. It has already claimed the witch of Burowao as well as the war chief of the Hawk clan. The shaman and other war chiefs have had part of their spirit taken by these things and the people are in a panic...
